Seven Tips For A Greener Wedding

Your wedding day marks the beginning of a new life together with your partner. How can you mark this very special occasion and at the same time minimise the impact on the earth and natural resources?

1. Consider museums and public venues as possible locations, a setting such as this can cut down on the wedding planning as it provides both entertainment and décor and can assist in carrying on the theme of the big day. Make sure your chosen venue has been accredited by the Green Tourism For Business scheme. Your chosen venue will be able to discuss with you how they can make your reception eco-friendly.

2. For total eco chic consider a vintage wedding dressing. This doesn’t mean you have to resort to wearing your mother’s 80’s meringue! There are many specialist vintage wedding dress shops throughout the UK. Alternatively look out for vintage clothes fairs and market stalls.

3. How do you invite your guests? One of the latest trends emerging due to the popularity of phones with in built video facilities is to record your own video Save The Date and upload to YouTube. Making sure of course that you have set the privacy settings. Afraid that Great Aunt Maud won’t get the hang of new-fangled technology? Look out for handmade stationery suppliers who use recycled paper and organic toners.

4. If you are web savvy consider setting up your own wedding website (remember to keep it password protected). A hub where your guests can meet up online before the big day, view photographs of the happy couple and RSVP online! Don’t forget to look out for green hosting companies such as Hostgator!

5. Not decided on wedding favours yet? How about these eco-friendly ideas. Consider seed packet favours, giving your guests the opportunity to remember your big day in the months to come. Consider purchasing fair trade gifts from charity shops. Always contact them in advance and let them know how many items you need in good time for the wedding. Alternatively, ask your Best Man in his speech to let the guests know that you have made a donation to a favourite charity.

6. Catering, consider using locally sourced produce and don’t forget there are many UK produced wines. Why not opt for traditional regional dishes as well?

7. Many couples choose to have candles on the reception tables. Please ensure that your venue allows candles as many can be strict about their usage. If you can have candles ensure you choose soy, palm or beeswax as they made from natural sources and scented by the use of essential oils. If your venue won’t allow candles consider the alternative of rechargeable candles. The ambience of flickering light without the flame.

We hope these simple tips will help you to mark the occasion in style, whilst saving resources for future generations.
